Linux Kernel Bugzilla Launched
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/14/234249
[0]paskie writes "Martin J. Bligh of IBM [1]announced launch of a
[2]Bugzilla bug tracking database for 2.5 linux kernel series - it's at
[3]bugme.osdl.org. Finally there will be some possibility to easily
keep track of known bugs without being subscribed to thousand of
mailing lists or googling to death. According to the relevant lkml
thread, kernel developers will still prefer discussions to happen on
the mailing lists, though. The Bugzilla server and connection is
donated by [4]OSDL and IBM folks administer the database."

W3C Policy To Favor Royalty-Free Patents Only
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/14/2037216
A [0]report on NewsForge notes that the Last Call Working Draft of the
World Wide Web Consortium's patent policy has reversed the possibility
found in earlier drafts of allowing patents in Web standards which
required "Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory" (RAND) licensing fees.
This draft is the result of the [1]vote by the W3C's patent policy
board mentioned last month, which came after a [2]proposed loosening of
the royalty-free standards in the Fall of 2001.

Using Your Own Name May Be Infringement, Part 2
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/14/1940206
phillymjs writes "We're probably all familiar with [0]Uzi Nissan and
his fight to keep his nissan.com domain name from the clutches of
Nissan Motors. Well, more same-name idiocy came to light today-- the
[1]Atlanta Journal-Constitution is [2]reporting that their staff music
writer, Bill Wyman, has received a cease-and-desist letter from lawyers
representing former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman, for "a seriously
misleading and, arguably, an intentional, unauthorized exploitation of
our client's name, goodwill and publicity value." It should be
interesting to see how this one plays out, because Bill Wyman the
musician was born William George Perks and changed his name to Bill
Wyman in 1964. Journalist Bill Wyman was given that name at his birth
in 1961."

Taiwan Asks Microsoft To Open Windows Source
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/14/1813251
[0]Andy Tai writes "According to [1]this China Times article (in
Chinese), the Republic of China government has asked Microsoft to open
Windows source code. The official, Lin Jua-Cheng, in charge of the
[2]'e-government' initiative, says many other countries have also sent
similar requests to Microsoft. Lin explains that without Windows source
code, the government cannot add custom firewall functionalities to
Windows based systems in wide use, and that is very bad for the
information security of Taiwan. Microsoft refused to publicly release
the source in the past using reasons of copyright protection, but Lin
emphasizes this request is reasonable since it is based on (government
users') necessity." Read on for a bit more, too. (Can anyone suggest an
online Chinese <--> English translation engine that produces other than
gibberish?)
