Subject: [xine-user] news from the legal front

Hi folks,

maybe this is a big mistake (since I hate the longish discussions
following any such posts), but I feel that any new information about the
legal situation of copy protection is vital, so here we go:

- according to http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/ghi-11.01.02-000/
Jon Johansen will be prosecuted for his (maybe) work on the DeCSS
  programm - after two years.

- EU directive 2001/29/EG is currently adopted by many european
coutries (this process must be finished by 22.12.2002). This directive
contains quite few fundamental changes to the currently quite liberal
legal situation - for example it explicitly protects copyright
protection mechanisms thus making, like the DMCA, circumvention of these
  mechanisms illegal.

perhaps these news will make some of the people crying "css is legal now,
why doesn't xine include it" think again.

Cheers,

   Guenter
