não sei muito bem o que dizer para te ajudar no teu problema, nunca o
tive nem via webmail nem via cliente de email, thunderbird ou
claws e sylpheed.

aliás via webmail é ainda mais estranho que o tenhas...

em firefox dá olhada a que fonte estás a usar se estão para western e
no view->character enconding->automatic

qto ao que dizes no que citei, recomendo-te que faças um backup do
email via https://www.google.com/settings/takeout

e não tenhas medo de usar o thunderbird com imap pq não irás perder
dados as config default dele não te destroem a conta de email ;)

mas faz 1º o backup via a ferramenta da google.
