Pelo erro, parece que não tens o X a correr ou que estás a usar um utilizador
que não tem acesso ao X.

Testei em ubuntu, e funcionou sem problemas, também com o openjdk (optei por não
criar os links para /usr/local/bin)...

$ LC_ALL=C update-alternatives --display java
java - auto mode
  link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java - priority 1061
  slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/man/man1/java.1.gz
Current 'best' version is '/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java'.

$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_24"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.1) (6b24-1.11.1-4ubuntu2)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)
